Die Rolle von Kimmich als Verteidiger sorgte in der Vergangenheit für Diskussionen. Julian Nagelsmann, der frühere Bundestrainer, setzte Kimmich wiederholt als Rechtsverteidiger ein, auch bei der Weltmeisterschaft. Berichten zufolge hatte Nagelsmann Kimmich im Sommer zugesagt, ab dem Achtelfinale wieder im Mittelfeld spielen zu lassen, doch das DFB-Team schied bereits vorher im Sechzehntelfinale nach Elfmeterschießen gegen Paraguay aus.

Die Rechtsverteidigerposition ist seit Langem eine Schwachstelle im deutschen Team, und es muss erneut nach einer Lösung gesucht werden. Simultaneously, Kimmich will continue to serve as the captain of the German national team.
Kimmich's role as a defender has sparked debate in the past. Former national coach Julian Nagelsmann repeatedly deployed Kimmich at right-back, including during the World Cup. Reports suggest Nagelsmann had promised Kimmich a return to midfield from the round of 16 onwards in the summer, but the DFB-Team was eliminated a round earlier in the first knockout stage after a penalty shootout against Paraguay.
Who could play right-back for the DFB-Team under Klopp?
The right-back position has long been a problem area for the German team, and a solution needs to be found once again. For the upcoming international break from late September to early October, names like Elias Baum (Eintracht Frankfurt), Ridle Baku (RB Leipzig), or even midfielders such as Felix Keidel (SV Elversberg) and Merlin Röhl (FC Everton), who can also play as full-backs, are being considered.
Klopp will announce his squad for the four upcoming international matches against the Netherlands (September 24), Greece (September 27 and October 4), and Serbia (October 1) on Thursday at 10 AM during a press conference at the DFB-Campus in Frankfurt.
