Lukas Kwasniok on the Brink at 1. FC Köln: Successors Already Discussed
1. FC Köln remains deep in crisis following a disappointing Rhine derby, and coach Lukas Kwasniok is reportedly on the verge of being sacked. Although Kwasniok appeared composed on Sunday morning after the 3-3 draw against Borussia Mönchengladbach, signing autographs for fans, many signs point to his imminent departure.
A brief 20-minute visit by Kwasniok to the club's administrative office seems to have initiated crucial developments. Sporting director Thomas Kessler has reportedly decided to dismiss Kwasniok, with a committee meeting scheduled for the afternoon to finalize the decision. Sunday's planned training session had already been canceled.
Following the derby, Kessler had only vaguely commented on Kwasniok's future, announcing an "open-ended" discussion without giving a clear commitment. He emphasized the disappointment over dropping points: "The expectation was clearly three points."
Several names are already being discussed as potential successors. Assistant coach Rene Wagner is considered a favorite for an interim solution. Despite Friedhelm Funkel successfully saving FC last season, there had reportedly been no contact with him. For the summer, Dino Toppmöller, former Eintracht Frankfurt coach, is being considered as a long-term solution. Thomas Letsch, the former coach of Bochum and Salzburg, was also spotted at the derby on Saturday.
Kwasniok himself showed a defiant spirit on Saturday, vowing to fight for his job "with everything I have." The 44-year-old expressed conviction that he is the "right man in the right place" and assured that he still felt the backing of the club's management. He praised his team's performance, which, however, had not been adequately rewarded, and emphasized the team's unity.
Since Kwasniok took charge at the beginning of the season, 1. FC Köln has steadily fallen into the relegation zone after a promising start. The team has been winless in its last seven games and has secured only two victories in the last 18 matches. The club faces the threat of its eighth relegation from the Bundesliga.
Despite Eric Martel's late equalizer (84th minute) against Gladbach, which Kwasniok claimed brought FC "closer to our overall goal," Kessler expressed doubts about Kwasniok's continuation. The sporting director stressed the necessity of making "adjustments" to start winning games again, as the ultimate goal is to keep 1. FC Köln in the Bundesliga – "whether with or without Kwasniok."
